This morning we went to the Lion Zoo. We saw lots of lions in pitiful cages with concrete floors and flimsy wire/bars. We got to watch a keeper feed the lions what looked like a whole side of beef. We also saw monkeys, baboons, rabbit, tortoises, and kudu. There were a group of kids there from a local orphanage and they were throwing lollipops to the monkeys. (No "don't feed the animals" signs anywhere in sight.) We watched one monkey almost grab a little child who was holding a sucker. The adult chaperones of this group just smiled and laughed. I had to take my child and get away from that situation!
The afternoon was spent at our Visa appointment at the U.S. Embassy. We had quite a long wait in a stuffy room filled with parents and children. When it was our turn the three of us were called upstairs and were "interviewed" by an American embassy employee at a counter window. Imagine standing at a teller window at the bank. The Children's Hope representative stood behind us and was there in case we needed him but everything went fine. We were asked a few questions like - Do you understand this adoption is final? Is this the child you were referred? Are you aware of her medical history? Do you think there has been any fraud involved? What happened to her parents? Did you meet any birth relatives? And so on... And that was it. We signed a paper or two and were congratulated. Libby's Ethiopian passport will be ready tomorrow!
