What's in a name?

Our daughter's first name will be Alison. I've chosen this name to honor my late maternal grandmother. You see, Nannie always wanted to be named Allison. Her father's name was Newton Allison and I remember Nannie telling me on several occassions that she just couldn't understand why her parents didn't name her Allison after her daddy. Instead of Allison, her parents named her Thelma Kate.

Not that there is anything particularly wrong with Thelma, but you have to know the whole story behind that name. Her parents named her after their two mules! No joke. This is a true story. Nannie was one of a dozen or so kids and by the time they got to her, I guess they were running out of names so they named her after the two mules they owned: Thelma and Kate. So I don't blame Nannie one bit, for wanting to be named Allison.

The funny thing is though, Nannie only shared her desire to be name Allison with me. No one else in the family recalls her ever mentioning this. But I can see her so clearly, standing in the kitchen by the sink turning around from washing the dishes while I was sitting at the kitchen table and telling me in her matter of fact tone that she should've been named Allison.

So our daughter will be named and called, Alison. I think Nannie would have liked that.

I love the story and the name.
I think back pretty often about my Nana, whom my oldest daughter was named after.
Thank you for the post, it made me smile.
